The tight microphone pattern is great for picking sound from a direct source and rejecting other sounds. You can invest in a unidirectional microphone if you are a lecturer or have important online meetings to attend. The sound coming from the microphone’s side is slow or less intense.Ī unidirectional microphone does not have any sound source at the rear end. It has a heart-shaped sound pickup grill recording sound directly in front of the microphone. However, a unidirectional microphone is the opposite of an omnidirectional microphone. An omnidirectional microphone picks up sound from all sides hence, it also records a lot of background sound. How does a unidirectional microphone function?īefore understanding how a unidirectional microphone works, you must look at how omnidirectional microphones function. It only focuses on picking up the speaker’s voice while eliminating interruptions. Users love to invest in a unidirectional microphone if they are taking calls or recording in a noisy environment.

However, if the audio source is on the opposite side, the sound will be mellow.Ī unidirectional microphone is also known as a directional or cardioid microphone. The audio is clearer when the sound source is on the pickup side. The microphone’s pickup pattern is in the direction of the sound canceling the noise.Ī unidirectional microphone has two sides: a pickup and opposite sides. To record clearly on a unidirectional microphone, one must ensure that the sound source is directly in front of the microphone. It is perfect for recording lectures and attending meetings where you want the main sound source to be clear. I'm curious to hear about other suggestions though as there has got to be a better way to simply record audio in the lecture setting.A unidirectional microphone is great if you want to remove the extra noise and focus only on the main sound source. Audacity's noise removal tool does a pretty decent job of eliminating that, although a weird psychedelic sound effect becomes apparent in speech as a result. When you sit close enough, try your best to avoid background noise (fans, furnaces, AC units, etc), and get lucky enough to have an articulate and loud speaker the results are good.Īdditionally, sometimes the webcam will pick up an annoying hum and just carry that through the whole recording. The room environment, how far away you're sitting and how loud the lecturer talks are pretty huge factors in the end result with using this as a mic. However, the Lenovo webcam has AGC and I would say is overall a little smoother in quality than the onboard in that it doesn't pop/click/pick up fan and HDD noise. My onboard mic is actually more sensitive than the Lenovo webcam.

wav which are huge files I have to convert), and I've also been using RecordPad Sound Recorder which is pretty nice but only free for a limited time (2 weeks or so).Īnyway, the quality as far as recording lectures is so-so. You can record using either the built-in sound recorder of your OS (I'm using 7's), you can use Audacity (although I haven't been able to get it to directly record as. For lectures I just use the microphone part, although video-recording lectures wouldn't be a bad idea either.

My "solution" was to buy this Lenovo USB webcam. I thought about something small I could just put in the line-in jack, but all of those mics need power that I doubt my line-in will provide. The onboard mic on my laptop does a great job at picking up voices in lecture, but it's located just under the Fn key on the keyboard so I can't use the computer while recording a lecture. I was in the exact same position at the beginning of this semester.
